Pupil A's journey at Aurora Poppyfield School
Background and challenges
When Pupil A joined Aurora Poppyfield School, they faced significant challenges linked to autism, ADHD and Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. These challenges made school life difficult at times and impacted their ability to regulate their emotions. This led to frequent behavioural incidents that affected their engagement with learning and put their school placement at risk.
Staff quickly saw beyond the challenges and recognised Pupil A’s potential. They were committed to finding the right ways to support Pupil A so that they could stay engaged in education and begin to experience more positive school days.

Targeted support
In autumn 2025, a bespoke package of support was put in place. This included dedicated 1:1 support and a nurturing, relationship-based approach, giving Pupil A a consistent adult they could trust and rely on. Over time, this helped Pupil A to feel safer, more understood and better able to manage the demands of the school day.
Staff also worked creatively to build learning with Pupil A’s interests and strengths. As part of this approach, Pupil A began attending a Level 1 Motor Mechanics course at Fast Forward Alternative Provision, once per week. This new pathway gave them the chance to develop confidence, independence and a sense of pride in what they could do.
Impact and progress
The impact of this support has been significant. This year has been a clear turning point. Since the introduction of 1:1 support, Pupil A has been able to remain consistently in school and focused on their learning.
Pupil A is engaging more in lessons and making steady progress across both core and foundation subjects, including Functional Skills English and Maths, Science, PSHE and Food and Nutrition. Pupil A is also working towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, building perseverance, teamwork and personal responsibility along the way.
At the alternative provision, Pupil A has achieved 100% attendance and has been recognised for their outstanding progress on the Motor Vehicle Studies course. Tutors describe their attitude to learning as excellent and note that they work well with both staff and peers. They bring a positive energy to the learning environment and take real pride in their work.

Pupil A’s voice
Pupil A can see the changes for themselves:
“It feels better not having any suspensions. Last year I had lots of behaviour incidents and was out of school a lot. This term has gone really quick because I’ve been in class more and busy doing my work. I much prefer school this year, and having a 1:1 helps.”
Looking ahead
With the right support in place, Pupil A is now thriving. They’re developing practical skills, working towards qualifications and growing in confidence as they think about their future. Most importantly, they feel settled and secure at Aurora Poppyfield School, where they can continue to learn and succeed.
Pupil A’s journey shows how personalised support, strong relationships, and meaningful learning opportunities can transform a young person’s educational experience and help them achieve positive, lasting outcomes.
