Building bug hotels through words

Class 3 at Aurora Keyes Barn School have brought their literacy learning to life through a hands-on approach to instructional writing. As part of their studies, the children explored how to read and follow clear instructions by linking their work to their topic ‘Beast creator.’

Using carefully written guides, the pupils demonstrated their reading comprehension skills by building their own small animal habitats. From bug hotels to mini shelters, each project required the children to interpret step-by-step instructions accurately and work collaboratively.

This engaging activity not only strengthened their understanding of instructional texts but also deepened their awareness of the natural environment, encouraging wildlife to thrive within the school community.
