Enrichment Provision

Enrichment at Aurora Keyes Barn School is a carefully designed, inclusive provision that takes place every week on Friday afternoons. It has been developed with a clear purpose: to ensure that all pupils, regardless of need or circumstance, have equal access to meaningful, engaging and developmental experiences beyond the core curriculum.

All of our pupils have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and we recognise that may face significant barriers when it comes to accessing extracurricular opportunities outside of school. Enrichment is our proactive response to this challenge.

Our Intent

The intent of Enrichment at Aurora Keyes Barn School is to:

  • Broaden pupils’ experiences and expose them to new opportunities
  • Support the development of lifelong hobbies and interests
  • Remove barriers to participation, including financial constraints, family availability and time commitments, and accessibility needs linked to SEND
  • Promote inclusion by ensuring every child can participate fully
  • Develop key life skills that support independence and future readiness
  • Promote wellbeing through increased confidence, self-esteem and a strong sense of belonging

We are committed to the principle that no child should be excluded from enriching life experiences because of circumstances beyond their control.

How Enrichment is delivered

Enrichment is delivered through a diverse and inclusive programme of activities that is tailored to the needs, interests and abilities of all pupils. We use pupil surveys alongside staff knowledge of each individual child to help shape the programme.

Activities are carefully planned to ensure:

  • Accessibility for a wide range of physical, cognitive and social needs
  • Adaptability so that all pupils can take part at their own level
  • High levels of support from trained staff who understand individual needs

Activities may include creative arts, practical life skills, problem-solving challenges, team-based tasks and exploratory experiences designed to help pupils discover new interests and open up the world around them.

Staff actively remove barriers by providing all necessary resources and materials, structuring sessions to reduce anxiety and increase engagement, offering consistent routines and clear expectations, and supporting communication and social interaction throughout.

Pupil voice is central to the planning of Enrichment, ensuring that activities are meaningful, motivating and relevant.

The impact of Enrichment

The impact of Enrichment is significant and far-reaching, with pupils demonstrating clear progress across a range of areas.

Personal development

  • Increased confidence and self-esteem
  • Greater willingness to try new experiences
  • Development of resilience and perseverance

Social skills

  • Improved communication and interaction with peers and adults
  • Enhanced teamwork and collaboration
  • Greater understanding of social expectations and relationships
  • Cognitive and thinking skills
  • Growth in problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
  • Increased independence when approaching tasks
  • Development of creativity and curiosity

Preparing for adulthood

Enrichment plays an important role in preparing pupils for later life. It supports pupils to become more independent and confident in making decisions, helps them develop transferable skills that can be used in employment and community participation, and supports emotional regulation and adaptability.

Equity and inclusion

Enrichment ensures that:

  • All pupils can access opportunities that may otherwise be unavailable to them
  • Barriers linked to socio-economic factors, family circumstances and SEND are effectively removed
  • Pupils experience a genuine sense of belonging and inclusion

Our long-term vision

The long-term vision of Enrichment at Aurora Keyes Barn School is to equip pupils with the skills, confidence and interests that will support them beyond school.

By helping pupils develop hobbies and passions, we aim to reduce social isolation in later life, encourage participation in community-based activities wherever possible, support mental wellbeing through engagement and achievement, and build strong foundations for lifelong learning and personal fulfilment.

Enrichment is not an “extra” — it is an essential part of what we offer, helping to prepare our pupils for a fuller, more independent and more connected life.
