College Students Triumph On Challenging Tors Trek

A group of intrepid students from Aurora Boveridge College, in Dorset, are celebrating after successfully completing a gruelling 15-mile trek at the weekend.
Five students, ranging in age from 17-21, took part in the British Army’s Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge, which took place on Dartmoor. Starting from Okehampton Camp, the young adults had to be self-sufficient as they navigated their route across the moor, via a series of tors, back to the camp.
Meredith, Jasper, Charlie, Luke, and George completed the challenge in eight hours 39 minutes supported by the college’s Head of Education, Lee Dales; teacher, Dominic Cumberbatch; higher level education learning support practitioner, Becky McGovern Foot and education learning support practitioners Lisa Sando and Tom Kemp.
Mr Dales paid tribute to the students’ self-discipline and said their commitment and team spirit, combined with months of training, had resulted in success.
“It was amazing to see how well our students handled situations that were very much outside of their comfort zone. In college, they’re used to us being very flexible around their needs but it was completely different on the challenge."
“The Army has very strict rules, for understandable safety reasons, which all participants have to adhere to but thanks to the students’ self-discipline and their support for each other, they were able to overcome any apprehension they may have had. It was an incredible achievement.”
Located in Cranborne, Aurora Boveridge is a specialist further education college for young adults with autism spectrum conditions and social, emotional and mental health needs.
