Fair gives students glimpse of future options

Students from Severnside school in Gloucestershire took time out from their studies earlier this month to look to the future and consider a range of career and Further Education pathways.

A careers fair, organised by the school, was held at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College’s Berkeley Green campus and offered students the opportunity to meet employers, hear from colleges and learn more about apprenticeships.

Among the exhibitors were St Brendan’s Sixth Form College in Bristol; the National Star College in Cheltenham; leading engineering firm Renishaw; and Hartpury College, which specialises in agriculture and animal care courses.

Deputy Head Teacher Christina Fortey said the event gave students access to both local and regional opportunities, spanning academic, vocational and apprenticeship pathways.

She added: “All our students, from year 7 to year 11, were invited to attend the fair because we believe it’s important to encourage our young learners to think about their future early, before the need to make a decision on their next steps becomes more pressing.”

Christina said she was impressed by how the students approached the event, engaging positively with the exhibitors and demonstrating a genuine curiosity about the careers represented.

Feedback from students included:

  • It helped me see jobs I didn’t even know existed.”
  • Talking to employers made me think differently about what I could do after school.”
  • The apprenticeship routes were explained well.”
  • I liked getting all the free stuff.”
  • I feel more confident about what steps to take next.”

Christina said she was also delighted that a number of parents accepted an invitation to attend the fair. She said: “The fair provides a valuable opportunity for parents to gain a clearer understanding of the options available for their children after school.

“We’re hugely grateful to all the exhibitors who took part and we look forward to welcoming even more parents to the event next year.”
