Ofsted approves Aurora Ivy Lane School expansion

Education inspection body Ofsted has approved the expansion of Aurora Ivy Lane to almost double its current intake following a visit to the school last month.
Education inspection body Ofsted has approved the expansion of Ivy Lane to almost double its current intake following a visit to the school last month.
Previously, Ivy Lane provided specialist education for up to 40 young people aged 11 to 19, with complex care needs including learning disabilities and behaviours that challenge.
Following the inspection, the mixed school can now cater for up to 70 pupils, which Ofsted said was a response to the “increasing demand for places in and around Wakefield”.
The inspectors found that the school met standards relating to the welfare, health and safety of pupils and were satisfied that standards relating to staff and its owner, The Aurora Group, continue to be met.
The school, which was acquired by Aurora in 2023, is currently rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, following a standard inspection in October, 2023.
Headteacher Michael Walsh said the expansion was needed to help the school meet a growing need for places across the region and support more young people who may at times have found integration with education challenging.
He added that to cater for the increase in numbers, the school has created four new classrooms and grown all parts of its staff team which includes teachers, teaching assistants, speech and language therapists, behaviour therapists and occupational therapists to support all current and future students to thrive in their educational opportunities.
In addition to classrooms, the school has recently added an interactive immersive room and trim trail to its facilities so students can learn in fun, interactive ways.
“Students, staff, families and visitors to the school have all been impressed with the high quality investment and facilities across site." Michael Walsh, Headteacher.
Michael said: "The first students to access the spaces have said how much they love their ‘excellent’ and ‘smart’ new learning spaces; feedback we hope will continue for many years as students benefit from the facilities and offer at Ivy Lane School.”
