Proud moment for Aurora Eccles as Oli wins Silver!

A student from Aurora Eccles School in Quidenham won silver in the javelin at the National ISA Athletics Final in Birmingham – having only taken up the sport two months ago.

Representing East Anglia, Oli Herrieven threw 29 metres at the Alexander Stadium to secure his medal, which he received from British Olympian and 800m record holder Alex Bell. His achievement follows his gold medal at the Eastern Region competition in Cambridge in May.

Head of Outdoor Education and Expressive Arts at Aurora Eccles, Rich Crowdy, said: “To come from a school for children who all have additional needs and compete against children in schools that routinely nurture elite athletes, and then to win a silver medal, left us absolutely speechless.”

“It is truly an incredible achievement.”

Oli said: "At first I thought I came third but when I learned I’d won silver I was so excited. I was very proud of the effort I had put in, training each week at school with my teacher and teaching assistants. I’m particularly pleased because I was competing against people who had trained for years and owned their own equipment while I’ve only been throwing for two months. That's pretty cool!”
