Pupils encouraged to create Meldreth Mania

There’s no excuse for not knowing what’s going on at Aurora Meldreth Manor School thanks to a group of students who have been busy publishing their very own newspaper.

Called Meldreth Mania, the termly publication captures all the noteworthy events and activities that have been taking place around the school.

The newspaper was the brainchild of teacher Amanda Walker, who suggested to her class that they should publish a school newspaper - and the idea grew from there.

Amanda said: “Our students, Samuel, Mary, Koko, Henry, Lance and Grayson, loved the idea and have thrown themselves into it. They’re doing amazingly well and have recently published their sixth issue. I’m extremely proud of the effort they’ve put into consistently delivering a quality newspaper.”

Samuel said the aim was to feature stories that were interesting, adding that his favourite story so far has been an article based around the popular Peppa Pig TV series in which Mummy Pig becomes pregnant with her third child and Peppa prepares for her new role as a big sister.

Henry is the newspaper’s ‘animal’ correspondent who’s written about lions and frogs as well as the canine star of the CBeebies’ TV show Hey Duggee.

The first issue of Meldreth Mania featured Special Announcements giving details of people’s birthdays, special events and those who were leaving the school. Samuel said: “It’s important to have a newspaper so that people know what’s going on.”

Inevitably, there’s lots to do to produce a newspaper each term and it involves a lot of effort from all the students.

“We work hard,” said Samuel, “and there’s a lot of writing but it’s good”. Mary added that they’re successful because they work as a team.

The latest issue of Meldreth Mania features a ‘Careers Special’ and includes articles on National Careers Week and World Book Day plus a report on successful real-world, work experience initiatives at the school.
