Pupils’ pet project prompts sanctuary visit

Pupils from Aurora Summerfields school in Cheshire enjoyed a trip to Wilmslow Animal Sanctuary earlier this month, part of a pet project they’ve been working on.
Seven pupils aged 10-13 visited the animal sanctuary, which rescues and re-homes unwanted, abandoned, stray and ill-treated animals, predominantly cats.
The trip was led by teacher Amanda Ward who said it had been organised as part of the pupils’ social education topic.
She said: “Our topic this half term is ‘looking after pets’ and, as part of our preparation for the sanctuary visit, we visited a large pet shop and bought toys and cat food to present to the sanctuary.
"Social education is about getting our pupils out of the classroom and giving them positive experiences in the community."

“The visit was a great success. Our pupils love animals and they had the opportunity to meet cats, ferrets, rabbits and donkeys and learned about how the sanctuary cares for all of these animals and how they rely heavily on donations from the public. It all feeds into their learning and provided a wonderful community engagement opportunity that helps build resilience.”
“The donkeys are my favourite. How could anyone abandon these animals?”

Amanda added: “We plan to finish the topic off with a trip to Chester Zoo. The pupils are most excited by the bat cave.”
